Two weeks ago I was leaving our Wednesday night church activity and as I pulled out of the church parking lot, a dark Jeep Grand Cherokee pulled in behind me and turned on flashing lights. My first thought was, "Man?! What did I do now? I swear I stopped at that sign and my registration is up to date!"
There wasn't anywhere to pull over (and I hate when people just stop in the middle of the street), so I was driving really slow and waiting until I came to a cross street. Fortunately, that gave me enough time to realize that something wasn't right. The car didn't seem like an undercover cop car to me. The license plate didn't say "Exempt," there wasn't that big spotlight thingy by the side mirror, and it was a Jeep! Things just didn't seem right.
So I started to get a little scared and I was trying to see the driver. At this time he started to get really antsy and was tail-gating me really bad. I picked up the phone to call X and just then he swerved around me and was driving like a bat out of Hades!
It was then that I realized that someone had just tried to pull me over...and he wasn't a cop!! Doesn't stuff like that only happen on the news? He got stopped up ahead by a red light and I was able to get his license plate number. I called the police and they were able to pull him over. Unfortunately, his lights were white and they are not illegal (only red and blue ones are) and since he didn't make contact with me, the police couldn't do anything. But they did try to scare the patootie out of him!
I really don't feel like he would have done anything to me; I think he was a stupid teenager just out to see how funny it was to scare people. But the thing is is that there's no way of knowing! We have to be so careful now!
So the moral of the story is the advice that the policeman shared with me:
- When you are pulled over, wherever you are, in town or in the country, ALWAYS keep driving until you can pull into a lighted, populated area. i.e. a gas station or grocery store. Any normal cop will understand and appreciate your attempts at safety
- It is okay to be on the phone when you get pulled over, assuming that you get off when they get to the window. I asked specifically because from now on I'm always going to call X to tell him what's happening and where I am.
- It is okay to ask for identification from the cop to make sure that he is legitimate. I'm sure there's some old, raunchy cops that will be offended by this, but it's our legal right and responsibility to take care of ourselves!
So don't be scared by this, just be aware and be safe!!

It's seriously like something out of the news. Glad all was well that ended well though.
oh man! you never can be too careful. i've always been a believer in taking every safety attempt necessary. i was held at gunpoint when i was little- with my mom and sisters right in the parking lot of toys r us. i know what it feels like to be scared, and how important it is to be safe. thanks for the reminder, and the tips on fraud cops. i hadn't ever heard of that before! i'm sure X was really proud of you!
okay i'm seriously crying right now! i'm never driving in texas again!!! i'd been really worried about that happening whenever i was home. i'm glad you are okay. i can't believe the police didn't do anything! love you!
Oh, my gosh! That's so scary! Thanks for the warning and the tips. I'll definitely keep them in mind the next time I see those scary lights in my rearview mirror. Glad you were safe!
Stupid kid...Wouldn't it have been so awesome if X was hiding in the back seat and you stopped and the kid got out and started talking smack? Then, X would pop out and say, "What was that, punk? Yeah, that's right, say that again to ma face!" Oh!
that's scary. you're a smart woman. thanks for the tips.
SCARY!! I already can't sleep at night b/c of stuff I watch on the news!
Thanks for the invite. That story is pretty freaky. I'm so glad you are okay!
Scccarryy! You're smart to look for the exempt thing on his plate. Glad you're okay!
Thanks for the invite! ;)
Tony is always telling me about those people who pretend to be cops. I've never known anyone that they've messed with, but now I do! Scary!! I'm glad you took a few extra seconds to call X- maybe that scared the kid off. It's so hard to think straight when you're pregnant. Way to go!!!
PS Thanks for the invite! I love keeping up with you guys.
Arghhhh! So scary!! You handled it like a pro. Way to go.
It always bugs me that the police can't do more until something worse happens. It doesn't seem right.
Okay, that totally freaks me out. Glad you're smart. I don't know if I would have been so wise....always smart to call the hubbie. Learned that the hard way when I DIDN'T call Matt after my fender bender. Hmm...I need to take lessons on street smarts. Glad you're okay!
I'm glad you didn't stop, that is pretty scary. I'll most likely be going back to Texas over the summer, so we'll have to try again then. Maybe I can even meet the lil one!
that is so scary! you are a smart girl to be careful like that. there is supposed to be a number that you call (like 211?)and your local police can look at where you are and if they actually have an officer in that area to make sure they are legit before you pull over.
